MANGO PUNCH! The veteran Latin-pop band led by Guatemala-born
Walter Suhr, has been popular in Houston for 15 years. The group has
recorded original tunes for the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton,
The Houston Texans, plus the band performed at the 2004 Super Bowl
in Reliant Arena. The 6 member band has just recorded a new disc, 5th
in their repertoire of hits, plus Mango Punch! Is a 5-time winner of the
Best Latin Band in the Houston Press Music Awards. The band has
performed along with Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Aerosmith and the
lovely and talented, Beyonce’.
Mango Punch! Band has performed on all major networks: ABC, NBC,
CBS, PBS, Telemundo, Univision, Galavision and Televisa. The band
has recorded 4 CD’s of original music. The bilingual repertoire includes
songs that span a large variety of styles, from salsa, merengue; Top 40
and American standards.
Walter Suhr graduated from U. of St. Thomas with degrees in music and
computer science. As a songwriter, he has won numerous awards.
Walter has written commercial jingles for radio ads, the Hispanic theme
song for the Houston Texans and his alma mater, U. of St. Thomas.
Other band members include: Paul Frometa, whose father was a band-
leader in Venezuela, is versatile on the guitar, does rock and pop/rock.
Luis Duarte, native Houstonian, is a versatile musician as well, but
the bass is his forte. Doris Rios, born and raised in Puerto Rico, and has
resided in Houston since 1986, where she works the Magnet Coordinator
for a HISD school. She does vocals, plays guitar with the band.
