Jesse Dayton was raised on the Gulf Coast musical gumbo that accepts
everything from classic heartbreak honky-tonk to classic rock to blue-
eyed soul. Jesse's musical vision goes far beyond the boundaries of
what we usually consider country music. Jesse Dayton has an independent
maverick streak.
Jesse Dayton, in going his own way, started his own Stag Records label,
producing his own records, giving him freedom and independence. A lot
of people have called Jesse a lot of things. He was a guitarist in country
legend Ray Price's orchestra, Johnny Cash, after hearing Jesse run through
a few songs in a Nashville studio, respectfully called Jesse Dayton 'different'.
Indeed, Waylon Jennings called on Jesse when Waylon injured his picking
thumb.
Jesse was heavily influenced by soul artists and soulful country artists:
George Jones, Conway Twitty, Charlie Rich and Jerry Lee Lewis, also
Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver, Townes Van Zandt. Whether he is
covering a classic or singing one of his fine originals, he is doing more
than emulating artists who have gone before him. In everything he does,
Jesse Dayton pays respect to the country tradition while forging ahead.
